We are proud of Aditya
In a Thursday evening in November 2010:
Aditya, a student who practices Taekwondo in Zen’s Bayshore Park, was greeted with an appreciation after returning a lost phone back to its owner. The blackberry phone which he found on a bus, was handed over to the bus driver. The owner was then contacted and hence managed to retrieve the lost phone. He expressed his gratitude towards Aditya through text message stating, “Hey there Aditya! I’m the owner of the phone you found just now. Just wanna say thanks so much for returning it to SBS, really, thanks so much! I can’t survive without this phone , and it means a lot for one kind soul like you to find and return it. God bless! J”
In this incident, Aditya has demonstrated great discipline and by fulfilling the Taekwondo pledge “…We shall remain humble, honest and helpful at all times…”, he has thus set a good example for his fellow mates and any other individual.
Best Regards,
Catherine Ong

STF: Demonstration Workshop Filled With Energy
You did not read it wrong. They did it with the assistance of the trainers and were on the high a feel of the movements. Something inside them told them that they could perform it without help if they had more practice. In fact, one of them believed she could and tried it on a new landing mat without supervision. She almost succeeded....

The Taekwondo Coaching Course organized annually by the Singapore Taekwondo Federation (STF) will now be replaced by the NCAP Technical Course.
Before the change, those who successfully completed the Taekwondo Coaching Course were issued with a coaching certification equivalent to the NCAP technical if they did not possess any NCAP theory certification. This was because the requirement was for all participants to attend the theory course before the technical course.
The change means that members are free to attend either the NCAP Technical Course or the NCAP Theory Course first to gain a full certification.
Those holding the taekwondo coaching certification can now apply for direct conversion even though they have not attended the theory course. The application must be submitted by 19 November 2010 on the attached form and accompanied by a copy of the coaching certificate and the administrative fee of $20.

Post Grading Fun - Oct 2010
Post Grading Fun - Oct'10 |
The once every 3 months little training treats & tricks were here again.
NYP did a little gym movement and mini-tournament.
Zone 3 students were satisfied with the cultural Dog N Bone. Jet and Justin kicked off the game as usual against each other. As always, Jet will grab the Bone against all odds and dashed to the finishing line, however this time, he suffered slight pain as Justin's "touch" was too rough and Jet fell flat onto the ground.
I-Lok's dad's encouragement could be heard clearly when the players were observing the opponents without action, "DO SOMETHING!"
Brian Sir and Girlene mdm wishes everyone the best of luck to their grading results!

Talk on Taekwondo @Chatsworth International School (East Campus)
On 30 Sep, Chatsworth International School (East Campus) invited Brian Sir to give a 30min talk on Taekwondo. It was a rare sight where 9years old kids will stay still throughout the 45min speech that Brian Sir gave on the spirit of Taekwondo. He emphasized that it is not only the hands and feet destruction, but more about the tenants of the way of life that Taekwondo inbuilt into the students. At the end of the speech, Brian Sir shared a video featuring the Korean Demonstration Team. Students were encouraged to ask questions whenever in doubt. I have to admit that they are very "open" in their mindset which encourage steep learning.

Overseas Experiences - Sep 2010
Brian Sir brought Justin Peh to Melbourne's STA Australia Open Championship 2010. Justin participated in the Poomsae and Sparring and came back with a Gold and Silver medal respectively.
Brian Sir: "It was a good exposure for Justin for his first Sparring tournament is an overseas one, following the path of his dad!" Brian Sir was reminded of his first Sparring tournament in his life, in Malaysia.
He noted that the Australian organisers were very "flexible" and "understanding", so when participants travelled thousand miles to participate, so if there is no competitiors, they can adjust the weight categories instanteously to allow all participants to take part happily.

Girlene mdm flew to Vietnam's Go Vap Taekwondo Club Open 2010, together with 7 other referees.
Girlene mdm wants Mr Darren Lee Sir for giving the STF's Board of Referees the chance to go overseas to officiate before they turn International Referees: "It is not easy for him to gather people who are not under his club, make the necessary arrangement, take care of them throughout the journey, in the end all of us had great fun and bonded even tighter."
Girlene mdm: "The kids were fierce! We could see none but one defensive fighter throughout the tournament. All the other kids were attacking at the sound of "Kyeso" ("resume" in Korean language). One boy, 8 years old in particular, did not shed a tear when the opponent gave him a slamming kick right to the face. When I was counting to 8, he was ever-ready to return the kick back to his opponent. I can see fire in his eyes!"

Both trips were arranged at a short notice, but Brian Sir and Girlene mdm seized the chance as they understand that such experience do not come easy. They have a common goal when they are back in Singapore: To bring our students overseas more often for such exposure.
Thank you Benjamin and Joel, Alex, Catherine, and all blackbelts who came down to assist, for taking care of the classes when Brian Sir and Girlene mdm not around.

News: WHAT HAPPENED AT THOSE SCHOOL SPORTS INCIDENTS
NEWS
========
SINGAPORE - Three-and-a-half months after his judo match, Tan Ser Yung, 16, is still in hospital, undergoing rehabilitation.
But the injury that led to a blood clot in his brain was not caused by any illegal moves on the mat, a committee of inquiry has found.
After examining a video recording of the entire contest, the committee set up by the Singapore Schools Sports Council (SSSC) concluded that not only had the bout been conducted in a "structured and orderly manner", with ample safety measures in place, but the rules and regulations were "more stringent" compared to "some international youth championships".
These investigation results were also corroborated by experts from judo federations in Japan and the Singapore Judo Federation, according to a Ministry of Education press release yesterday.
The release of the findings comes at a time when Ser Yung is "recovering well" at Ang Mo Kio Community Hospital, said his school principal Koh Thiam Seng. But the hospitalisation bills are piling up, and St Joseph's Institution is pitching in to help.
"The school has been encouraging and supporting Ser Yung and his family through frequent visits by teachers and students. The school has also undertaken a fund raising exercise to help Ser Yung and his family," said Mr Koh.
"To date, the school has raised about $75,000 from the students, parents, alumni and from his parish Church of St Mary of the Angels to help pay the medical expenses when required."
Besides Ser Yung, another sportsboy had been seriously injured earlier this year.
But a second committee convened to look into a rugby match in March could not conclusively determine when and how exactly Bedok Town Secondary student Adhe Noviello, 17, sustained his head injuries.
But the committee said the organisation and safety provisions for the match were "consistent" with matches played at the National Inter-School Rugby Championships 2010 Police Cup Under-17. It also noted that the referee had "carried out his duties in accordance with the protocols required, and was in control of the match".
According to the Education Ministry, as this is the first time such serious injuries have happened during inter-school games competitions, the SSSC has decided to provide financial assistance of $25,000 to each of the affected families to help defray the medical costs.
As for the "unsportsmanlike behaviour" displayed in a third sports incident earlier this year - a rugby tie between Anglo-Chinese School (Independent) and St Andrew's Secondary School - a discipline committee has recommended the guilty students be disqualified from school- and national-level sports awards.
In the more severe cases, the players are also banned from rugby activities for a year, said MOE.
The recommendations mirror moves taken by the schools after the incident.
But the committee also found the actions of the St Andrew's rugby coach to be unacceptable of a professional coach and recommended that the school take disciplinary action against him.
